The 2023 NCFA Playoffs would be hosted at the Glass Bowl in Toledo, OH.  The games would feature two lopsided victories as top seeded Central Georgia Tech knocked off the Wild Card Michigan State in the opener  by a score of 46 to 14.  The night cap followed with #2 Ohio State  defeating #3 Sacred Heart  43 to 9 to set the stage for the National Championship Game.

The 2023 NCFA National Championship Bowl Game was set for a match up between  #1 Central GA Tech against #2 Ohio State for the title. The matchup would mark OSU’s 3rd straight title game appearance and Central GA Tech would get their first taste of National Championship action.  The Titans would set the tempo early and never look back as Dvenio Davis would return the opening kickoff 85 yards for an opening TD.  The Titans would tack on another TD just 4 minutes later as DeShawn Cumby would turn an OSU turnover into more points with a 41 yard TD pass to David Okoi.  The Buckeyes would get on the board 3 minutes later when Spencer Moore hit Abdou Keita for a 44 yard touchdown pass.

CGT would answer again with 12 minutes to go in the 2nd when Cumby run the ball in from the 5 yard line but a missed point after would make the score 20-7.  Ohio State would be down but no out, as one again Spencer Moore would connect with Abdou Keita for another touchdown pass, this time for 11 yards.  This would end the scoring for the first half as the teams headed to the locker room at half time with a score of CGT 20 – OSU 14.

The 3rd quarter would be quiet with neither team putting up points until Central GA Tech’s Ryan Reno hit a 23 yard field goal 3 minutes into the fourth quarter.  The Titans would then add one more touch down with just 2 minutes to go in the game as Jaylen Nobles would run it in from 6 yards out securing the win and a second half shutout of the Buckeyes by a final score of 29-14.

2022 Post Season History

In 2022, the NCFA once again returned to it’s format of a 4 team playoff leading to the National Championship.  The new wrinkle was that the league was split into 3 conferences (instead of 4) which enable 3 conference champs plus a Wild Card (determined via the power rankings) to fill out the field of playoff teams.

The 2022 NCFA Playoffs would be hosted at the George Mason RAC Field in Fairfax, VA.  The games would feature two lopsided victories as top seeded Ohio State (6-0, 9-1) knocked off the Wild Card George Mason (2-0, 5-3) in the opener  by a score of 63 to 6.  The night cap followed with #2 Gordon State (4-0, 9-1 ) defeating #3 Sacred Heart (2-0, 6-1) 55 to 7 to set the stage for the National Championship Game.

The 2022 NCFA National Championship Bowl Game was set for a match up between  #1 Ohio State (6-0, 9-1) against #2 Gordon State (4-0, 9-1 )for the title. The matchup would give OSU a shot at a 3rd straight National Championship and Gordon State their first taste of National Championship action.  The Buckeyes would get on the board first with touch down run by QB Kellyn Gerenstein in the first quarter.  Gordon state would respond in the 2nd with a touchdown run of their own by Will Richardson, but a missed extra point would leave OSU with a 1 point lead heading into half time.

The 3rd quarter would get started with an OSU scoop and score fumble recovery and a successful 2 point conversion to expand their lead to 9.  Gordon State would respond quickly with a touch down pass from Neal Howard to Pacer Kincaid and successful 2pt try of their own to once again bring the OSU lead to just 1.

But the 4th quarter belonged to Cedrion Brundage of Gordon State.  He ripped off touch down runs  of 65, 44, and 13 yards to seal the deal for Gordon State and securing their first National Championship by a score of 35-15.

2021 Post Season History

In 2021, the NCFA did not host an NCFA Playoff weekend due to insufficient teams cleared to play in the NCFA after the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead, the top two teams in the power rankings at the conclusion of the conference championship games were given a bid to the National Championship Bowl Game.

The 2021 NCFA National Championship Bowl Game was set for a match up between  #1 Ohio State (4-0, 6-2 ) against #2 George Mason (4-0, 6-2) for the title. The matchup would give George Mason a chance at a rematch with the Buckeyes as Ohio State defeated the Patriots 29-28 in a week 4 non-conference match up.  The Buckeyes would get on the board first and often taking a 28-0 lead late into the the 2nd Quarter.   George Mason would be able to carry some momentum into halftime as Chase Soper would connect with Adam Abu-Jamous with a 34 yard TD pass with 5 seconds left in the half.  A successful two point conversion would send everyone to the locker room with a 28-8 OSU lead but with a sign of life for GMU who was set to receive the 2nd half kick.

However, the clock would not be George Mason’s friend as they wouldn’t be able to get back on the board until late in the 3rd quarter and with OSU answering back with a TD of their own no the ensuing possession.  The 4th quarter would start with a 35-15 OSU lead until George Mason would once again get a breath of life when Soper hit Brooks for a 73 yard touch down pass.   But again the Buckeyes would answer right back with a Spencer Moore 33 yard touch down run.  Mason would tack on one last TD late in the fourth to close the gap but the Buckeyes would wind up as National Champions by a score of: Ohio State 42 – George Mason 21

Kellyn Gerenstein took home the MVP award at the 2021 NCFA National Title game by being a catalyst for his team on offense. While he only completed 8 of 20 passes, he recorded 195 yds and 2 TDs through the air.  On the ground he ran for 104 yds on 24 carries scoring 3 TDs.  Kellyn’s performance was, indeed, MVP worthy as he helped lead the Ohio State Buckeyes to a repeat as NCFA Champions.
